Like many of you, I have several other interests besides survival. I also enjoy bass fishing, camping, kayaking and firearms, just to name a few. One common thread that I have noticed and is a huge factor in all of these activities is... preference.
Beer. Cars. Sports. Attraction to the opposite sex. Dog Breeds. Trucks. Food. Hobbies. Clothing. Wine. Music. Pizza toppings. Guns. Knives. Survival Gear. Survival plans. Which ones are the best? As you know, there is no definitive "right" or "wrong" answer to this question regarding these things. It is based purely on preference. The answer to these question isn't which option is the best, but rather which option is the best for you! The "answers" to these questions are completely personal. They are based on such things as confidence, comfort, environment, familiarity, experience, sentiment and personal taste.
My overall point is, when it comes to survival, you are going to read a lot of opinions about what the best knife is, what the best gun is, what the best firesteel is, etc. The only way to answer these questions is to research, ask questions, try different options yourself, and... once you make a decision, refrain from making becoming emotionally attached to it. Suspend judgement. Always be open to other options in the future. You may settle on a 12 gauge shotgun for home defense, but down the road you may learn the advantages of an AR. Be open to trying new things and finding better solutions.
When it comes to "advise" and "suggestions" from friends, loved ones and other folk, it is prudent to listen to what they have to say and seriously consider their input, but ultimately the "final" decision is yours. The input of your friends and family are going to be based on THEIR tastes and preferences, not yours. You are going to need to be able to decipher which suggestions are based on practical and Your tastes and preferences are what matter when you make decisions about strategies and gear, not someone else's.
We are all familiar with adages like, "There is more than one way to skin a cat." or "Six of one or half dozen of the other." Sure, there are absolutely a good number of universals in survival and preparedness (e.g., you must maintain your core body temperature, you must stay hydrated, etc.), but there is a lot of personal preference too. A huge key to making the right choices for your survival plan is knowing which questions have definitive answers and which ones have unique answers depending on the individual needs of the questioner. Realizing this will be absolutely KEY to helping you make those critical choices for your survival plan.
Don't get caught up getting paralyzed looking for a definitive answer that doesn't exist. A less than ideal plan implemented is usually often preferable to no plan implemented at all do to "research paralysis"....
"Get yourself killed..." 'Armchair survivalist"... being mean spirited. We all make choices we are glad we did and... we all make choices we end up wishing we didn't. NONE of us knows all the answers. Dogma is dangerous. Consider what many have to say. Don't necessarily choose just one solution. Choose two, if not three! No one knows definitively what the most likely event to occur is. Pandemic? Terrorist attack? Economic collapse? We simply don't know. Will cities be the safes place to be after said event, or the more rural areas?
What's better in a home invasion situation... a 12 gauge shotgun or an AR? Yes! What about a handgun? YES! Tent or hammock? Yes! You see... not every question has a definitive answer. A lot of it has to do with preference based on experience.
