Survival Packs

Choosing the right pack to carry your gear is of paramount importance. There are lots of choices out there, and like with everything else survival, it is going to be a personal choice that only you can make for yourself. I am going to go over some things to consider when choosing a pack, but the ultimate decision is going to be up to you.

Size and Capacity (which quickly translates into weight)

Most quality packs are extremely adjustable, so sizing in terms of fitting to your body is less of a concern than the actual capacity of the pack. Why does this matter? Well, ironically... the larger the capacity your pack is, the more likely you will be to fill it to capacity and carry too much weight. Choose a pack that is of a capacity that will prevent you from succumbing to this temptation. Purchase a pack with a capacity that will keep limit you to carrying a load that is just right for your size and strength. Remember, in a survival situation, you are going to be tired, hungry, cold, hot, wet, thirsty and mentally less sharp. You are not going to be at your peak, so keep your load as light and compact as possible without sacrificing any important tools.

As with many items, the old adage “You get what you pay for” is particularly true. Cheap packs simply do not hold up. That being said, just because a bag is expensive does not guarantee that the bag is good quality and will last. You need a bag that you will be able to rely on for the long haul. Your pack is your home base. You are going to depend on your pack to hold all of your precious gear. If it gets a hole in it or a strap gives out, you could end up losing some of your gear or damaging it. In other words... do your homework.

You also need your pack to protect your gear and supplies from moisture. Poor quality packs typically won’t do this very well. Some quality packs have really nice rubberized zippers that prevent moisture from getting in. Zippers are a typical vulnerability in packs, especially when it comes to moisture. They are often one of the first things to break in a pack. Make sure your pack has quality zippers on it. Many quality packs also include a pack cover that will fit over your pack to protect it from moisture. This is a good thing to look for as well.
