When developing your preparedness plan, the best place to start is with a "threat assessment". A threat assessment is simply a comprehensive look at the various potential threat scenarios that could throw you into a "survival" situation. This would be based on your own personal set of circumstances (where you live, where you work, what you do for a living, local political and economic circumstances, etc.) and conducting an honest assessment of how realistic these threats are for you and your family. Once you have a good sense of what threats may pose most significant for you and your family, then you can factor other variables into your plan such as climate, health, family needs, finances, skill sets, knowledge, gear, supplies and host of others.
This assessment is going to be different for everyone and it is going to be completely subjective, mostly because we all have different political, religious, and emotional viewpoints. Below is an example of an assessment that I have put together for myself based on where I live and my personal belief system. On the left hand side I list the various threats that we should all consider, even if only briefly. The middle column is the level that I have assessed the particular threat to pose for my situation. In the right column I explain why I have chosen to assess this threat at the level that I have.
I do NOT suggest that any of you just copy my the threat assessment example below and use it as your own. Don't be lazy. Apply some mental energy and time and assess each of these potential threats for your own situation. My plan could be completely wrong for you and... I will more than likely even change it for myself over time. Probably even multiple times.
