Perfect On-The-Go Survival Food: Flour Tortillas!!

The vast majority of us love Mexican food, don’t we? Burritos, soft tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, fajitas… And what about “wraps”? You know, great “fillings” like buffalo chicken, chicken caesar salad, club sandwiches, breakfast burritos, and SO many others… rolled up in a flour tortilla? Flour tortillas have become a staple in the American diet. We even make ultra-thin crust pizzas with them!

You can put almost anything in a flour tortilla and it just tastes better. But did you know how easy they are to make? And how few ingredients you need to make them?  (even fewer than the infamous bushcraft bannock bread! )And you can roll them out with an empty wine bottle? And, unlike bread, they aren’t prone to smashing when stored or carried?

So why are tortillas such great survival food” exactly? Well… several reasons. They are so simple and easy, yet versatile. Many of the things that you are already stocking up in your pantry are great candidates for tortilla stuffers. Eggs, Spam, refried beans, chili, home grown produce, canned chicken… the list is endless. And tortillas give you a way to roll up your food and eat it quickly and even on the go if need be!

All you need to make tortillas is some flour, water, and shortning/fat/oil to bind them together (If you have some salt and maybe a little bit of baking powder, even better!). Roll out your little dough balls with an old wine bottle or flashlight, then bake until just starting to brown… stack and carry!
